Advancing the Ocean Decade Through Scientific Collaboration
Opportunity
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO recognized a pressing need to develop a robust scientific framework under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), known as the “Ocean Decade.” The goal was to gather “the science we need for the Ocean we want,” focusing on creating methodologies, communities, and best practices to ensure a sustainable and healthy ocean, thereby supporting a thriving Blue Economy.
Approach
To realize the Ocean Decade’s vision, a comprehensive approach was adopted. The Data Coordination Group was formed, bringing together 25 global experts to share knowledge and best practices. This group played a critical role in developing the Ocean Decade Data & Information Strategy, ensuring that the scientific methodology aligned with the needs of diverse stakeholders, including United Nations bodies, governmental organizations, scientific institutes, and maritime industries.
Additionally, the coordination office provided essential support to the 11 programs and 91 projects endorsed under the Ocean Decade, focusing on key areas such as communication, fundraising, and strategic development. Collaboration with the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) further enhanced organizational strategies and operational improvements.
Impact
The initiatives led by the IOC under the Ocean Decade framework resulted in significant advancements in ocean science and policy. The formation of the Data Coordination Group catalyzed international collaboration, enabling the development of coherent data strategies that support climate change mitigation, improved weather forecasting, and the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems. The successful endorsement of various projects created a foundation for enhanced understanding of the ocean's health and its economic potential, paving the way for a sustainable Blue Economy.
